A new marathon world record – 2:01:39!

Eliud Kipchoge won the 2018 Berlin Marathon, with a terrific new world record of 2:01:39!

The route of the Berlin Marathon is considered one of the fastest in the world – it’s very smooth and flat. Many elite athletes choose the Berlin Marathon to set new records. But what happened on September 16, 2018 was a real sensation. Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya improved the previous world record (by the way, also set at the 2016 Berlin Marathon) by 1 minute 18 seconds. The last such big leap was observed in the world of marathon sports 50 years ago, when the Australian Dennis Clayton became the first man to break the 2:10:00 milestone in 1967!

Kipchoge became the first runner to overcome the milestone of 2:02:00. Sports observers predict a long life for this record.

Just as reminder, in the spring of 2017, Eliud Kipchoge finished in the Breaking2, Nike’s project in the Italian Monza with a time of 2:00:26, which was not considered as the official marathon world record due to the controlled race conditions.

As before, 33-year-old Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge remains the main favorite to break the two-hour barrier in the marathon. The Berlin start just confirmed this. The second runner finished 5 minutes later. During his running history, Olympic champion Kipchoge won 10 of the 11 marathon starts.

It will be interesting to know Sri Chinmoy’s vision on the development of specific qualities for a marathon runner to break the 2-hour marathon barrier. Please follow the reference
